I have to confess, I've never thought of myself as the scrapbooking type. Too cutesy, maybe? Too many things to buy to get started? I'm not sure what exactly....
But when I discovered ali edward's blog, and saw some of the things she was creating, it started to stir a little interest in me. I thought, "I kind of like that. I want to do something like that!"
And then this summer when I went to lunch at my grandmother's and my dad mentioned, "Oh, your second cousin (once removed, or something) Katie is going to be at lunch today. And I think she's a blogger, too." and that "blog" turned out to be designer digitals, and she turned out to be the founder/designer/owner....well....a whole lot MORE interest was piqued.
And then Katie and I started talking and brainstorming....and then we started thinking about the fact that I homeschool...and then all of a sudden I couldn't stop thinking of all the ways I could use digital scrapbooking with the girls and with the things we were learning.
When they ached to do something on the computer, we could sit down together and do something a little more creative and interactive. And we could talk and create. And I could nonchalantly assess what they were learning and remembering....and....and.....
So, at this point there is a big gap between my ideas and my skills. But we're dipping our toes in the water around here. I've got lots of ideas, and I'm slowly bringing them together.
And with all the big egg news of late, it seemed like the obvious place to start.
I give you our first dip into the world of digital scrapbooking. For now, I see us creating pages that are reflective. A collection of daily journals, highlights, moments from our day, things we don't want to forget.
For these pages, I created the layout and the backgrounds. The girls dictated the text to me and chose some of the colors. And it was a lot of fun. Emma has been designing pages in her own journal, with pencil and paper. Things that she wants to turn into digital scrapbook pages. She's writing things down and drawing pictures and making plans.
I think this is going to be a lot of fun.
The details:
Background: Little Forest Friends Kit
Eggs! text: Wynken, Blynken and Nod Kit
Hanging Tags No. 1
Hinged Frames No. 3
Date Strips No.3
(chicken prints via google images with a litle tweaking)
That looks like a great compromise if you're not into paper scrapbooking. Keep sharing your work - it's great!

That would be a good way to improve my own computer skills! You said your girls dictated, do you think you'll start them on typing at some point (I'm not sure about their ages)? Just curious, it seems like one of those key skills nowadays ...

Oh, THAT'S clever!!! And the girls will love to keep these.

These are so great! I can't help thinking about the girls looking back over this stuff forty years from now, and thinking about what a crazy-great Mom they have.

What a great beginning! These pages are delightful. Scrapbooking is a great way to combine photography, writing, and your creative spirit.

Tooooooo cute!!!!!!! Love it!

Brilliant! What a great way to bring together technology with schooling and journal-ing and creating. Love it!

Well aren't you smart? I love this!

Molly, this is great! Personally, I love to scrapbook but constantly feel entirely overwhelmed about it. I love all the pieces and parts and putting everything together. But then I need to clean it all up and nothing is finished and who knows when I'll get to get it all back out again...
Digital scrapbooking is such a fantastic idea. I have yet to do it, but have looked at some of the Creative Memories stuff as well. You might want to check them out for more ideas!

I really like the pages you did it looks like you made a scrapbook page and glued the eggs to the top of it, great job!

Is it difficult to digital scrapbook? It always seemed so daunting. I would love it if you would share your process and how you created such great pages!

I never thought of doing it that way. I do it the old-fashioned way and it takes me forever. Is it hard to do? Are you printing on the Epson Artisan printer you told us about before?
Also, I emailed you my contact info for the PEEK mobile email device that I won. I have not heard anything in return so I was wondering if you received my email. Please let me know. Thanks!

Ha ha- welcome to the dark side my dear. I started in blogging because of scrapbooking and because of Ali specifically, so this is so cool to read. I had never thought about using digi to inspire/test my kiddos, but what a great thought! Mind if I "borrow" it? I was only a paper scrapper, but I am slowly dipping my toes into hybrid and digi...
I am so jealous of the eggs and chickens...if we lived 20 ft more west, we would be in the county and could keep chickens, but half of our property lies in the city, and I therefore can't have them. *pout*pout* So I'll live vicariously through you girls and wait patiently for the farmer's market in May.

What a great idea. Our chickens quit laying for the winter. It was too cold. I'm so excited that they've started laying again too!

I love digital scrapbooking (and Katie and Ali!) My kids have done a little digital scrapbooking and I keep meaning to include more of them doing it in our homeschool, but I don't like to share my computer! LOL! I guess I'll need to find my CD and install PSE on their computer. It's kind of like doing digital notebook pages :) My goal is to have enough pages documenting some of the stuff we've done this year and then have it printed as a Shutterfly book. So then they'll have a school "yearbook" of sorts.

Please show me how this works. I would love to do it but I don't know how. Maybe that lesson could replace the knitting since I know I am going to be terrible at that!

This is wonderful Molly! Love what you did with the journaling and the how you changed the color of the title for each girl! And I love Maureen's idea to put a year of pages into a Shutterfly book--I'm so addicted to those!! Can't wait to see more! :)

Molly, I love Ali Edwards, too. I have been a traditional, paper scrapbooker for years, but I started doing a little bit of digital stuff after reading her blog. I've also been inspired by a lot of the products on Designer Digitals. How interesting that you know Katie Peritet! This sounds like a great idea to do with your girls. And I think you'll find it addicting, too. Scrapbooking doesn't have to be cutesy, as you can see from Ali's blog and others like Cathy Zielske.

Your egg page is really cute. Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to complete that page. A couple of years ago, I bought a digital scrapbooking computer program at Costco and tried it out, but it literally took 1-2 hrs per page. I'm curious if the program you are using is more user friendly.

same thing happened to me....Ali Edwards' blog sort of changed what I thought about scrapbooking in general. Her layouts have made it much more interesting.
I've visited Designer Digitals before....how funny that you are related to the owner!
Cute egg layouts!

so you just go to their website and purchase the templates and stuff? that's cool.

scrap-booking can be redonkulously expensive...can I send you some left over stash of the line I designed for Daisy D's. It's not as refined as Ali's work but I think the girls might have fun playing with it. =) I think I might have and extra digital set...lemme check.
